Yet another successful event!  OK, the wind didn’t cooperate cutting down the top finisher’s speed to a bit over 3.5 knots.  No records set in this event…  14 entries, 11 finishers.  Three of our newcomers, two with the same boat name, Marionette,  and Jugaste topped their classes with 1st place finishes.  Our other new boat to the racing fleet was Dad’s Dream who came in a very respectful second.  Bruce on a beautiful restored Choy Lee 50 restored this old woody. Mario on his 25′ Piver Trimaran has been looking to join us when he ran into Billy and got signed up, we’ll be seeing more of him in the upcoming season.  Rick on Dad’s Dream is new in town here for repairs and a break in La Paz.  Welcome them to Veleros de Baja!

John and crew on Aventura had a great run finishing 1st in Class A Spinnaker.  It should be interesting when he gets his new sail, watch out fleet!   Bill on Cloud IX and David on Ansa with brother Mike (Echo) looked impressive with their spinners flying.  John with Jody and Shelly of Eros/Avatar flew a spinnaker for the first time after sorting out a few details and due to time constraints weren’t able to finish.  Something about no wind near the finish line…

Max on his little speedster Panacea II took top honors in Class B despite almost getting run over at the start by some boat named Karma.  Doug on Charity was a last minute entry taking 2nd showing off his traditional tan bark sails.

Us on Karma, despite being first over the start line was the last over the finish line.  Everybody needs an excuse and ours was we ripped our mizzen sail before the start.  Our average speed was 2 knots.  Rather a slow day I would say…  We took 2nd and last in Class B!  Jugaste was 1st in B Spinnaker.

The multi-hulls were led by Marionette followed by Patty on Pitufa.  Pitufa is sporting a new look with an almost finished blue paint job on her hulls.  Billy, Jo and crew on Yellow Star decided to use the short course retiring early to their mooring.  Carl on Banana Split was out there sailing around but also didn’t make to the finish line.

As usual Al on Xochitl kept track of the fleet and stayed an hour after the cut off time to time those of us who struggled with the lack of wind.  Great job Al!

And now on the after race party and dinner.  Celebrating our third season as a club, Bob our former Commodore and founder of the club was given a gift of appreciation and thanked for all his hard work running the club in beginning years.  From all of us, a big Thank You Bob!

After the race results were read and plaques given to all dinner was served.  We started out thinking that we would do well selling 30 meal tickets, surprise folks, we sold out at 63!  The club dug into the treasury and made available a keg of beer to all.  The ribs were fantastic as were the  baked beans and potato salad.  Dinner was followed up by dancing to the tunes of Plan B, the La Costa house band.

And now for a few last notes for the season.  We put on 7 races this season including running the Bay Fest event.  Entries averaged 12 boats per event.  Next season if for at least 1 event per month between November and July with a few multi-day events scattered along the way.  Your ideas are welcome for new course ideas and activities.  Mention was made about the possibility of late afternoon, early evening races to actually race with wind.  What a concept!

I would also like to get an early season tee shirt design printed at the start of the season.  Stan formally of Storm Bird made up this years design which is outstanding.  We’ve run out of all sizes except for XL.  For those members who haven’t gotten their shirts, I’ve got yours put away awaiting for your return.

Many thanks to all who have participated this last year.  We’ve had a great time!  I will continue to update this site and as soon as I sort out a schedule it will be posted!
